One of the talks at the MTBG business networking meeting asks a simple question in Hindi: आपकी पहचान: व्यापारी या उद्यमी? Is your identity that of a trader or an entrepreneur?
Two respectable ways to do business
A trader buys, sells and serves, deal by deal. Income follows effort: more hours, more deals. Many of India’s strongest family businesses run exactly this way.
An entrepreneur builds something that works when they are not in the room: a team, a process, a brand, a channel that brings clients in. Income follows the system.
Neither is better by default. But they grow in different ways, and it helps to know which one you are building.
Three questions to ask about your own business
- If you took two weeks off, what would stop? If the answer is “everything”, you are the system.
- Where did your last ten clients come from? If they all came through you personally, your growth is capped by your own network.
- What would you do with twice the demand? If the honest answer is “turn it away”, you have a capacity problem, not a sales problem.
Where a referral network fits
A referral group turns your personal network into a shared one. Every other member starts listening for your kind of client. That is often the first system a trader builds on the way to becoming an entrepreneur.
